Cataract Evaluation

At AIO, it is our goal to help educate you on the journey through the cataract process from evaluation to surgery. The plan for your cataract evaluation is much more than just a doctor appointment. Here at Associates in Ophthalmology, we strive to meet your eye care needs at one appointment. Evaluation of a cataract and preparation for possible surgery requires an extensive workup. We do this work-up all at one place - - in one day. Information will be discussed at your evaluation about what cataract surgery is, how it is done and the several lens options that are now available to you. We encourage you to write down any questions you may have to discuss with our doctors. This helps avoid having to make multiple appointments to our office. We want you to think about your lifestyle needs before coming in to your scheduled appointment. Please plan on being at your cataract evaluation for approximately 4 hours.

During your evaluation, you will most likely follow this schedule:

  • Diagnostic testing
  • Technician appointment with dilation of your eyes
  • Appointment with the Lens Selection Specialist
  • Appointment with the Physician
  • Surgical education and scheduling

There is a café located on the first floor for light snacks, sandwiches and coffee/tea. We encourage you or a family member coming with you to visit the café during your time with us at AIO.

LASIK Surgery Pre-Operative Exam

This is a very important step in your visual future. Our primary objective is to confirm that you are an excellent candidate for vision correction surgery and to determine which procedure is best suited for your particular needs. This evaluation will take approximately two hours. During this time:

  • You will have many measurements taken. We will examine all aspects of the health of your eyes, including those directly related to laser vision correction. We will triple check your visual prescription. Monovision will be demonstrated if applicable. We will measure the contour and thickness of your corneas. Your ocular pressure will be checked. You will also be dilated during this exam. You may experience difficulty seeing up close and you will be light-sensitive for approximately twenty-four hours after your exam, so it is helpful to bring sunglasses with you. Precise measurements are crucial to achieving outstanding vision correction outcomes. What may appear to be repetitive is, in reality, a reflection of the meticulous quality of care patients receive at Associates in Ophthalmology.
  • You will be given the opportunity to have any remaining questions addressed. Please feel free to ask our staff members any questions. Our staff specializes in pre- and post-operative care and is happy to answer any of your questions at anytime.
  • Please leave your contact lenses out according to the following schedule:
    • Soft lenses must be left out of your eyes 14 days prior to your examination.
    • Hard or Gas Permeable lenses must remain out of your eyes for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to your pre-operative examination.
